  1. Decoupage On Plate

    May 31, 2011 by admin

It has been a while since I conducted decoupage class. This time I couldn’t get the usual mugs I used for past class. I ended up buying plates.

The good thing is the participants have many space to pour their creativity to cut and paste down the decoupage napkin.

(Please click to view bigger image)

2 of them even signed their initial on their decoupage plates. I helped one to do shading on her plate. Since there was ample time I let them do lining around the plate.

This picture of plate with cherry design was taken by the participant herself and emailed to me later. I forgot to snap the picture while in class as she was the first person to finish and went home..hehe!

Next time I think I will incorporate writing sentiments on the plate for those who are interested to do so. Time to scout and print some great wording suitable for home decor..heh!

  2. Decoupage On IKEA Clock Rusch

    May 27, 2011 by admin

I’ve decoupaged this IKEA clock RUSCH like months ago. It is a cheap clock sold at IKEA Mutiara Damansara for RM3.90. I usually scout for suitable things to decoupage whenever I go to IKEA.

The body of RUSCH is plastic. You can even do decoupage around the body. I’ve seen people sell such decoupaged clock at flea market in Amcorp Mall and the Curve but couldn’t remember the price.

When you take out the clock from the box it comes from, turn at the back and you will find 3 holes. You should be able to tweeze the edge of its plastic face out if you plan to do decoupage inside the clock.

Here is how one of the holes at the back of the clock looks like.

This is how the front face cover of the clock looks like once you have tweezed the edges out from the holes.

I found a paper napkin with gardenia design on it. The napkin even has great sentiments – The beauty of all things lives in the soul of the person who observes them.

I didn’t want to cover the numbers because it will be easier for me to see what time in my craft room. I tend to overdo the time I allocate myself whenever I start to do any crafty work.

Once you have done with decoupage, you have to put the plastic face cover back on the clock. Make sure all the edges fit nicely back into their holes.

There you have, a one-of-a-kind IKEA wall clock. A good idea for housewarming and wedding present for those who are not so choosy when it comes to the price of a gift.

  3. Sew Your Own Flower

    May 25, 2011 by admin

I was so inspired to make my own scrap fabric flowers after watching youtube video and read the instructions on few craft blogs. I realized long time ago that I am not so good and patient when it comes to sewing but doing a simple fabric flower like this is not so much work, something that could be done in like 10 minutes or so.

I tweeted and asked where I could get good cotton scraps. A crafter friend, Tini of SnazzynSuch recommended for me to check Kamdar or Nagoya but later she dug her stash of fabrics and offered to sell me some..hehe!

This is American Cotton and it is such a joy to sew with it compared to cottons I bought from the nearest Kamdar. I couldn’t get any scrap pieces from the shop, the least amount they will sell to you is 1/2metre.

First you need to cut 5 squares out of the scrap fabric. I think mine were 6 x 6cm. You can experiment with different size since the bigger square you cut, the bigger petal your flower will have. It depends on what you want to do with the end product. If you were to use on cards and scrapbook layout, I think 6x6cm squares will be good enough as it will produce a flower with 6cm diameter in size.

The first step after you have cut the square is to fold it into triangle. The right side of the fabric design should be up. Get ready with your thread and needle and start sewing from the most left edge of the triangle.

When you have come to the next triangle edge, pull the thread and you can see that the petal shape has started to emerge.

Continue stitching along to the next edge. You don’t have to stitch very tight and neat, just enough to bind the fabric together so that you can pull the thread later.

Once you have completed the first petal, continue stitching with the second triangle.

This is how it will look like once you have completed two petals. Continue stitching all the 5 petals.

Once you have completed the 5th petal and tie the knot on the thread (I turn the flowers and tie the knot at the back), you will find out that there will be a hole in the middle of your completed flowers. You can use button or even another flower like crochet flower to layer on top of the hole.

For this particular flower size, I have to use a button with diameter 25mm to cover the hole. I usually use Glossy Accent to glue the button. Not sure whether hot glue gun will work as well. Will try with different type of adhesive to see what work best.

Oh, you can also use paper or cardstock cut into round shape to be glued at the back of your completed fabric flower if you were to use it as embellishment on scrapbook layout or cards. But if you were to use this fabric flower as embellishment on bag, headband or hair clip, then you won’t need to use the paper backing suggested.

If you manage to make your own fabric flower after reading this short tutorial, I will be very happy to see the picture of your handmade fabric flower or simply read your comment about it.

  4. Decoupage On Wood/MDF Board

    May 18, 2011 by admin

Please click to view bigger picture.

I have done the background for this MDF board door sign for ages. I think it was my beginner’s attempt to do crackle effect. I can’t even remember which brand of crackle medium I used for this particular work since I have tested several until I finally stick with Crackle Medium from Plaid bought at Art Friends, The Gardens.

After reading what my decoupage buddy did in a local craft forum, I decided to try printing out the wordings, trace them onto the painted and decoupaged MDF board and later paint the traced words using black acrylic paint. Of course you will need to use liner brush to paint the wordings. I thin down the acrylic paint using Flow Medium to make it easier to control the flow of the stroke.

I think I will find a wooden stool and use the same climbing ivy design. The ivy design came from paper napkin. Oh, I need to find some screw and framing hook so that I can hang the completed door sign on my craft room door.

  5. Eyelets on Green Layout

    April 19, 2011 by admin

Last week I was learning the correct technique on how to print out picture on 4R size photo paper. Sometimes using my simple way of cropping the picture in Photoshop and send them to printer doesn’t give the output that I want. After learning more about the Fixed Ratio style and resolution, I managed to print this picture of Murraya paniculata or Kemuning flowers.

Please click to view larger image

The challenge that I am up to this month is to use a minimum of 23 eyelets on the layout. Check out Scrapbookers Anonymous April Challenge.

I hardly use the bunch of eyelets I bought in 2006. Reason being I hate making holes for the eyelets to go through. I’m not sure whether there exists such updated tools that will make the task easier. I’m still using the ancient tool I have to make the holes..huhu!

On the right side are the first 10 eyelets I put on the layout. I also found a sentiment sticker that fits the gardening theme for this layout.

Since I was using the Webster’s Pages Wonderfall diecut paper for this layout that is already beautiful, I tried not to embellish it too much.

If there’s one thing I regret doing, it was sanding the edge of the picture in a dim lit room. Only when I snapped the picture I realized how too sanded the edge became…huhu!

For the chipboard, I used acrylic paints. I misted some paint using wet brush on top of the chipboard and painted the edge in Antique Gold.

Oh, check out the other 13 eyelets, what a wrist workout to make all the 23 holes..huhu!

I am also entering this layout for Scraptivations April Challenge. I just found out about the challenge while reading Bec Miller’s blog. Thanks Bec for commenting!

I think those combination of bright yellow, cream and green are just perfect for flower theme layout like mine.

  6. Altered Door Hanger

    April 19, 2011 by admin

This is the first time I do anything crafty with door hanger. I’ve got one through decoupage gang gift exchange last year, but that one was using napkin.

I thought for the 3rd Week Scrap-It-Lah challenge I will do something decoupage like but using patterned paper instead. It is some rosy, shabby style pattern which I hardly use for scrapbook layout. I fussy cut the main flower, glued it down and inked around the image so that it blends with the background.

90% of the materials used for this altered work are some old stuffs I bought like 4-5 years ago. Oh, I get to use the Making Memories sanding block I bought to sand the paper all around the door hanger.

At first I used rub on from Bohemia line of My Mind’s Eye to embellish the background but it was too subtle as the background paper is dark maroon. I dug out some old Queen & Co felt self adhesive scroll in white and arranged them to fit the left part of the door hanger.

I plan to stamp or use alphabet sticker to spell the name of the recipient on the top part of the hanger once I have decided who I will give this door hanger to.

  7. Mother’s Day Card

    March 25, 2011 by admin

Still in the effort to make do with whatever craft stash I have in possession, this time I am using the 6 x 6 paper pad and baker’s twine I bought from Shirl many months ago.

It is the My Mind’s Eye Fine and Dandy collection. I am interested to use the hanging banner pattern after seeing how others implement it in their layout.

This is also the first time I tie the twine inside the button hole. The first button was done quite well since I cut the twine quite long. For the second button with yellow twine, I decided to be frugal and cut it short before I tied them..damn..it was hard to fumble with a just-enough-length of twine..as you can see the twine ends all loose up as the consequences..huhu!

I also tried to print the Mother’s Day sentiment on patterned paper. I printed a trial piece on plain paper and then I glued the piece of patterned paper at the area where the first piece was printed on.

I should have use repositionable glue as the Glue Dots that I was using were too strong..huhu!

Well, at least I learned a few new tricks doing this simple Mother’s Day card.

I am entering this card for Simon Says Stamps Challenge – Mother’s Day/Girlie.

  8. Altered Art Notebook Cover

    March 22, 2011 by admin

The other day while on FB, a friend mentioned about hoping to get another hand made covered diary. I made one for her when we were like 14..haha! So while rummaging the stack of craft stash I have in my craft room, I found this A5 size notebook I bought at Daiso.

I’ve seen many crafters altered the cover of notebook and clip board. I thought perhaps I should try to make one. I also found the glossy Mod Podge I bought about 2-3 years ago. Since it should dry clear, I thought it will be a great tool to use to paste all the embellishments and the paper.

I’ve seen how Tim Holtz demo using Claudine Hellmuth Studio Multi-Medium, and was really tempted to buy one. But since I have this art resolution this year to make-do-with-whatever-in-the-stash-until-I-can-buy-a-new-one, I thought well, might as well give the Mod Podge a chance. Luckily it works just fine.

I used some scrap paper from Basic Grey Perhaps line as the background paper. I found a great sentiments sticker from Kelly Panacci (you know I am such a sucker for motivational wordings) and matted it with pink (fuchsia??) plain cardstock. I distressed the edge and inked it white.

Lastly, inspired by a button video from twopeasinabucket.com, I decided to apply the Mod Podge at the right side of the cover and put as many Prima flowers I have that will go well with the color theme. I so love the outcome. Just to put on some more bling effect on the flowers, I glue rhinestones using the same Mod Podge. It dries glossy.

Now I am more excited to create more altered art notebook cover project like this. Next time I will look for notebook with plain black papers in them. Great for making art journaling.

  9. Card Using Kraft Paper

    February 19, 2011 by admin

It’s been a while since I last made anything that is suitable to be shared online. Of course I have made several scrapbook layout with family pictures, but that one I can’t share it here.

Thanks to my crafter friend, Shirl of Crafteeguiri who told me that I can get Kraft paper from bookstore like Popular, I finally found one in Sunway Pyramid.

The base card is the white cardstock I have. I cut the kraft paper accordingly and glued on the front side of the card.

    kraftcard

The angel stamp I got from winning the Scrap-It-Lah September challenge. I know it’s been a while since last September that I managed to use something from the RAK I won..huhu! I think the stamp is from inqueboutique.com (tried to access the website but couldn’t get through, like it’s no longer exist).

Anyhow, since I bought some Tim Holtz distress inks like Tattered Rose and a bottle of Ranger Perfect Pearls Mist, I decided to test them on a piece of drawing pad. The background paper on which I stamped the angel was the result of my experiment..heh!

I feel that I have to practise more on stamping as the result was not so smooth. In order to cover up the imperfection, I decided to use Tim Holtz Stickles by Ranger Ink on the stamped image.

    card-on-craft-table

I think I really have to spruce up my craft table as I couldn’t find the Glue Dots to stick the brown ribbon properly. But for now, I think this will do as the first card I share for 2011.

  10. The Basic Of Crochet

    February 9, 2011 by admin

Last year around August, I was so into crochet. I spent many hours searching for free patterns mostly for flowers. My main intention to learn crochet at that time is to do embellishment for hairband. Since I learned the basic of crochet by watching instructional videos on YouTube, I can only read the instruction step by step rather than read diagram.

Please click to see a larger image.

    crochetbasic

I have downloaded several free ebook patterns like crochet hats and crochet bags from crochetme.com. I think if I were to start crocheting again, I have to practice all the basic techniques like how to do chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet just to name a few.

Anyone here who are also into crochet?
